# Firmographic Data: Examples, Sources and B2B Uses

Quick answer

Firmographic data describes a business: its industry, size, location and other company attributes. It helps teams judge account fit. It does not establish who visited a website or whether an account intends to buy. Combine company attributes with separately verified activity and identity signals.

Firmographic data tells you what a company is like. Industry, employee count, headquarters and revenue range can help you decide whether an account belongs in your target market. They do not tell you that the account is shopping for your product today.

At Leadpipe, we separate company fit from visitor identity and intent. That distinction matters when a promising company appears in an API response: your next step depends on what the record actually establishes.

## What counts as firmographic data?

[HG Insights](https://hginsights.com/glossary/firmographic-data/) and [Demandbase](https://www.demandbase.com/faq/what-is-firmographic-data/) describe firmographics as attributes of organizations. These can include industry, size, revenue and location. The useful fields depend on the decision you need to make.

| Field | Example of a business decision | Quality question |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Industry | Route manufacturing accounts to a specialist | Is the classification current and specific enough? |
| Employee count | Separate small-business and enterprise workflows | Does the count describe the subsidiary or parent? |
| Company website | Find an existing CRM account | Is this the operating company or a holding company? |
| Country or location | Route to the right territory | Is the location headquarters, an office or a network location? |
| Revenue range | Review commercial fit | What currency and reporting period does the source use? |
| Business category | Separate operating businesses from infrastructure providers | What does the provider’s category mean? |

Do not require every field simply because a vendor offers it. If your routing rule uses industry and country, missing revenue might not matter. If employee count determines the plan you recommend, that field needs more scrutiny.

## Firmographics, technographics and intent answer different questions

| Data type | Question it helps answer | What it does not establish |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Firmographic | Does this company fit our market? | Current interest or a specific visitor’s identity |
| Technographic | Which technologies are associated with this account? | Whether the buyer wants to replace them |
| Website behavior | Which pages or actions were observed? | Who acted, unless identity is separately established |
| Intent signal | What relevant research or interest was detected? | A purchase commitment |
| Person record | Which person does the supplied identity evidence describe? | That the person owns the budget or will respond |

An account can be an excellent fit and have no observed interest. Another account can visit repeatedly while falling outside your serviceable market. Keep these dimensions visible instead of compressing them into an unexplained “hot lead” label.

Read the [intent versus visitor identification guide](/blog/intent-data-vs-visitor-identification/) when deciding which activity signals belong next to your company data.

## Choose the source by the identifier you already have

If you already have a company domain, evaluate providers that accept domains and return company attributes. If you have an IP address, an IP-to-company lookup is a different interface. If you need website sessions and identified people, a company record by itself will not supply them.

A practical buying brief starts with four lines:

1. **Input:** the identifier available in your workflow.
2. **Required output:** the fields needed for the next decision.
3. **Evidence:** how you will review the entity association and freshness.
4. **Destination:** where accepted data belongs and who owns corrections.

Use the [data enrichment tools comparison](/blog/data-enrichment-tools/) to separate contact, company and visitor use cases before comparing vendors. A long field list cannot compensate for an unsupported input.

## How Leadpipe returns company context from an IP

Leadpipe’s [IP to Company API](/product/ip-to-company/) accepts one IPv4 or IPv6 address and returns stored company information when available. Its documented schema includes company name, website, industry, employee count and location fields, among others.

The response is a provider-reported stored mapping. It can be stale, strings can be empty and some fields can be null. The API does not return a person or website visit, and it does not start a fresh enrichment request.

Two details affect how you use the result:

- A company-returning request uses one company-lookup unit. A null result uses none, but does not prove the address is unrelated to a company.
- The `annualSales` field has no supplied currency. Do not label it as dollars or compare it against a USD threshold without additional evidence.

Responses must not be cached or prefetched. Review the [documented usage rules](https://docs.leadpipe.com/ip-to-company/introduction) before deciding how company data will enter your application. The company allowance is separate from visitor-identification usage.

## A worked qualification example

Suppose your team sells implementation services to mid-sized manufacturers in a supported territory. This is an illustrative workflow, not a customer result.

Your required checks are industry, territory and company size. A returned record has a relevant industry and country, but employee count is null. Mark it **needs review**, not “enterprise” or “unqualified.” The missing value does not establish either conclusion.

A second record appears complete, but its website belongs to a hosting provider. Do not silently substitute one of that provider’s customers. Review the company association before account routing.

A third record passes your fit checks. If your goal is account research, it may be useful already. If your goal is following up with a specific visitor, you still need person-level evidence from the appropriate identification workflow. Researching a contact at the company does not prove that contact visited.

## Evaluate quality before expanding volume

Use a sample with independently known company facts where possible. Define accepted, rejected and unresolved outcomes before inspecting the provider results. Record missing fields separately from incorrect fields.

| Review dimension | Keep separate in your results |
| --- | --- |
| Entity association | Correct company, disputed company or unresolved |
| Field coverage | Required value present or unavailable |
| Field correctness | Verified, incorrect or not independently checked |
| Workflow usefulness | Accepted for the specific next action or held |
| Operating cost | Lookup consumption and review effort |

A complete record is not automatically correct. An incomplete record may still support a narrow task. The [visitor and company evaluation kit](/resources/visitor-identification/) includes a record-review worksheet for keeping these states visible.

## FAQ

### Is firmographic data the same as a company contact list?

No. Firmographics describe organizations. A contact list describes people associated with organizations. Neither alone proves website activity.

### Can I get company data from an IP address?

An IP-to-company provider can return a stored company association when available. Leadpipe supports IPv4 and IPv6 lookup, with explicit company or null responses. Review the association and available fields before acting on it.

### Does a company match identify the employee who visited?

No. Keep account identification, suggested contacts and matched people separate. See [person-level versus company-level identification](/blog/person-level-vs-company-level-visitor-identification/).

## Choose the right Leadpipe workflow

Use [IP to Company](/product/ip-to-company/) for stored company context from an address, [Identification](/product/identification/) for eligible visitors on your site, and [Orbit](/product/orbit/) for topic-based intent audiences. Confirm the access and allowances for your workflow on the [pricing page](/pricing/).

[Start with Leadpipe](https://dashboard.leadpipe.com/auth/signup): 7 days or 500 profiles, whichever comes first, no card. Confirm company API eligibility for your organization before planning an integration.
