Every marketing team I talk to has had the same argument at least once. Should we put our conversion budget on first-time visitor acquisition or returning-visitor reactivation? One camp says the first visit is the one that counts, because attention is freshest. The other camp says the fifth visit is the one that closes, because the buyer has shopped around. Both camps quote anecdotes. Neither has the data.

This post is the framework to run that measurement on your own pipeline, the structural reasons returning visitors close better, and what your team should change if the gap is large.
The honest answer up front
Returning visitors close at materially higher rates than first-visit form fills. This is not a Leadpipe-specific finding. Gartner’s research on B2B buying journeys consistently puts active research time at roughly two-thirds to 70% of the total cycle, before any vendor contact. That research happens on your site as repeated, anonymous visits. By the time someone fills a form, they have already done most of the work.
The volume mismatch is what surprises teams. First-visit form fills are usually the majority of total form volume. Returning-visit form fills are usually the minority of volume but the majority of revenue.
If your MQL dashboard weights every form fill equally, you are over-weighting the cohort that produces the least revenue.
Why the gap exists
Three structural reasons returning visitors close at higher rates.
They have done the research. A buyer on their fifth visit has already screened you against the obvious alternatives. The form fill is not the start of evaluation. It is the end. They are coming in warm.
They cleared internal consensus. B2B deals need multiple stakeholders. The visits between visit one and visit five often include the champion building internal support, sharing comparison pages, forwarding pricing. By form-fill time, the account has already aligned.
They are in-market right now. First-visit form fillers are a mix of tire-kickers, people who hit a form by accident, and the rare buyer who is truly ready. Fifth-visit form fillers self-select for active buying intent. The pool is cleaner.
This is a structural feature of how B2B buying actually works. The midbound thesis is built on this reality. The highest-probability buyers are almost never first-touch.
The methodology
You can run this on your own pipeline. The pieces:
1. Pixel coverage long enough to count
You can only count visits that happened after the pixel was deployed. A “first-visit” form fill in your data may have been the buyer’s fourth visit in reality if prior visits predated the pixel. Require the pixel to have been live for at least 90 days before the form-fill date. The bias is not zero, but the signal is real.
2. Deterministic visit-stitching
Cookies alone cannot stitch a buyer across their work laptop, phone, and home machine. A deterministic identity graph does. Without cross-device stitching, true returning visitors look like first-visit form fillers. The dataset gets noisier, the gap between cohorts gets compressed, and you under-state the finding.
3. Visit-number determination
For each form fill, count the number of prior distinct sessions the same person had on the site. Same-day multi-tab sessions count as one. Same-week multi-day sessions count separately. The visit number is what you measure against close-rate.
4. Close rate, defined narrowly
Close rate = closed-won / (closed-won + closed-lost). Unresolved opportunities are excluded from the denominator. If you include open opportunities, your number is biased toward whichever cohort has shorter cycle time, not toward whichever cohort actually closes better.
5. ACV as a second axis
Closing faster is not the only axis. Larger deals also cluster with more visits. Track average ACV by visit-number-at-form-fill alongside close rate. The two together tell you which cohort drives revenue, not just which cohort drives volume.
The shape of the curve
Across the B2B sites I have looked at, the close-rate-by-visit-number curve has a consistent shape.

Close rate is not a flat function of visit count. It climbs sharply between the first and fourth or fifth visit, then flattens. The 8+ visit cohort is small but disproportionately enterprise buyers who did exhaustive pre-purchase research. The ratio between fifth-visit close rate and first-visit close rate is consistently meaningful, often two or three times higher.
Run the measurement on your own pipeline to get your number. The shape tends to repeat. The magnitude varies by industry and ACV.
The hidden asymmetry: volume vs revenue
A common surprise when teams see this data for the first time. First-visit form fills are usually the majority of form volume but a minority of revenue.

The point is the asymmetry, not the exact numbers. If your lead-scoring system weights a form fill the same regardless of prior visits, you are mis-calibrating against the revenue you actually want to predict. What top-performing sellers do with this data
Across teams I have worked with, the sellers with the highest overall close rates share three operational habits.
They prioritize returning visitors in inbound routing. A returning visitor who hits the demo form routes to a senior AE, faster, with a tailored prep packet. A first-time form fill routes through standard triage. The labor allocation reflects the close-rate gap.
They engage pre-form-fill on identified returners. They keep retargeting windows long. A 14-day window cuts off most of the high-value 5+ visit cohort. The top-performing sellers extend to 60-90 days on retargeting and use content sequenced to the visit number rather than to the page alone.
Industry variation
The close-rate gap between first-visit and fifth-visit converters is consistent across B2B industries, though the magnitude differs.

Industries with longer research windows show wider gaps. Self-serve PLG flows behave differently because the activation event is closer to a casual signup than a buying decision.
Implications for the reader
Re-score your MQLs by return-visit count. If you treat all form fills as equal, you miss the highest-close-rate segment. Add prior-session count as an input to your lead scoring model and watch the calibration improve. The fields are already in any decent visitor identification webhook payload.

Reach out to returning visitors before the form fill. Person-level visitor identification surfaces them. The deterministic match rate climbs with each return visit, so by the time a buyer is on their third or fourth session, you can usually see them. Treat that identification as permission to reach out with a tailored message, not a generic sequence.
Do not abandon first-visit conversions. First-visit form fills close less often, but the volume is large and the acquisition cost is low. The right frame is: first-visit form fills fuel top-of-funnel velocity, returning-visit form fills fuel revenue. Both matter. Just track them separately.
Run the measurement once, then run it quarterly. Buyer behavior shifts. AI-assisted research is changing how many sessions a buyer needs before they self-identify. Your number from Q1 is not your number for Q4. Make this a recurring read, not a one-off study.
How returning visitors and identification compound
The relationship between visit count and identification is worth pulling out. Each return visit is another chance for the deterministic graph to attach signals to a person record. Cookie persistence, cross-device matching, and HEM linkage all benefit from repeated exposure to the same browser session and adjacent signals.
The practical effect: a first-visit anonymous user has a lower probability of being identified than a fifth-visit anonymous user. You see more of your high-intent traffic, not less, as visits accumulate. That compounds with the close-rate effect. Your fifth-visit cohort is bigger, more identified, and closes better than your first-visit cohort. Three effects in the same direction.

Limitations
- Pixel-coverage window. “First-visit” in your data may not be a true first visit if it predates pixel deployment. Require 90+ days of pixel history before counting.
- Cross-device stitching. Not every buyer gets stitched across all devices. Some true returning visitors appear as first-visit form fillers because the device match failed. This biases the first-visit cohort toward lower close rates, which makes any reported gap conservative if anything.
- Close-rate window. You only count deals that resolved to won or lost within your measurement window. Very long enterprise cycles still open at cutoff are excluded.
- Self-serve PLG behaves differently. Sites where “form fill” is “sign up for free trial” follow different curves. Segment those out where possible.
