Most lead scoring models are elaborate machines for converting signal into noise.

The scoring model was built for a problem most teams no longer have. The real problem shifted.
Most scoring models are arbitrary point assignments dressed up as analytics.
Go look at your current lead scoring rules. I will bet you see something like this:
- Visited pricing page: +15
- Downloaded ebook: +10
- Opened 3 emails: +5
- Title contains “VP” or “Director”: +20
- Company size 50-500: +10
- MQL threshold: 50 points
Where did “15” come from? Who decided pricing page was worth exactly 15 and not 12 or 23? Step 3: Let segmentation do the enrichment work. ICP fit still matters, but as exclusion, not as additive points. Route enterprise visitors to enterprise reps. Filter out personal Gmail visitors from B2B SaaS outreach. Suppress existing customers. Suppress known competitors. This is rules, not scoring.

Fair. But two things.

The scoring model made sense when MAPs were the only source of truth and the CRM was disconnected. In 2026, with webhooks, real-time alerts, and identification layers, the architecture can be event-driven. Scoring is the batch-job legacy of a pre-streaming world.
A score is a compressed opinion. A behavior trigger is a fact. Sales teams should get facts, not opinions.

Four moves, in order.
- Audit your current scoring model. Pull the rules. Ask: when was this last recalibrated against closed-won data? If the answer is “never” or “more than 12 months ago,” the model is decoration.
- Compare MQL conversion rate to identified-visitor conversion rate. If you have both, the gap is often 3-5x in favor of identified visitors. That is the cost of scoring.

The companies that make this shift spend less time arguing about MQL definitions and more time closing deals from real intent. That is the trade.
